    1. [S4] Obituary.
Fritz Schmidt, captain of the Iowa City fire police, died at 12:05 o’clock this afternoon at his home on East Davenport street.
He was stricken down Monday morning with cerebro-spinal meningitis, and has remained delirious ever since, suffering intolerable agony from the terrible attacks of this practically unconquereable ailment.
He leaves a heart-broken wife and scores of warm friends to mourn. He was a young man whom everyone liked in account of his genial ways and upright dealings. As captain of the fire police and in his numerous other connections with the fire department, he proved himself a typical volunteer fireman – fearless, earnet and ever willing to lend a hand for the protection of flame-threatened property and person.
His sudden death will be a great shock to his friends, very many of whom did not event know that he was ill.
