NEWINGTON —
Kathleen P. “Kay” Akerley passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2016, after a brief illness. Kay was born on November 14, 1923, the daughter of Ralph and Jane (Maitland) Hanscom. She graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1941.
For 30 years Kay was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, most of those years as personal secretary to eight Shipyard Commanders. It was Kay who was handed the first radio message from the submarine rescue ship Skylark advising that the USS Thresher was feared lost. In 1979 she was the recipient of the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award, presented by the Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command. She retired in 1981.
For many years Kay was active in the choir, Junior Church and Sunday School of the former Central Baptist Church in Portsmouth. In later years Kay attended the First Baptist Church in Hampton Falls and the Heritage Baptist Church in Dover. Kay was active in Newington town affairs, having served for a number of years as Chairman of the Conservation Commission and longtime member of the town Budget Committee. For many years Kay and Game Warden husband Carl worked together to write the popular Tracks ’n Trails in the Portsmouth Herald.
Kay was predeceased by Carl, her husband of 63 years, and by her brother, the Reverend Joseph W. Hanscom. She is survived by daughter Dianne Scott, daughter Janice Stuart and husband Dan, and son Joseph Akerley and wife Paula, all of Newington; a grandson Timothy Stuart and wife Laura of Farmington; granddaughter Krista Low and husband Dave of Gilford; granddaughter Heather Kelley and husband Joe of Newington; grandson Army Major Scott Akerley and wife Katie of Maryland; granddaughter Amanda Murphy and husband Rob of Portsmouth; and granddaughter Lori Arsenault and husband Brandon of Newington. Kay has five great-grandchildren.
