Mrs. Myrtle Thorne of Coles Island passed away at Mill Cove Nursing Home on March 29, 2013 at the age of 92. Myrtle was born in Cumberland Bay on August 23, 1920 and was the daughter of the late Neil and Bessie (Jenkins) Hetherington.
Myrtle was a wonderful woman whose life centered around her family. When she lost her first husband, Judson Perry, she worked very hard to take care of her children. She worked at other peoples homes doing housework and laundry or whatever they needed done to make sure her family’s needs were met. Myrtle was blessed to marry Bliss Thorne and they went on to have a wonderful life together until he passed away in 1999. Family was most important to Myrtle and she enjoyed having the family come to her home for a meal. She was proud of her children and grandchildren and enjoyed hearing what was happening in their lives. Myrtle loved knitting and quilting and many mittens and socks were made with love. She loved to hand her quilts over to her grandchildren after spending countless hours to complete them. yrtle also loved reading all types of books, whether they were inspirational, romance novels or biographies. She read many books up until her eyesight no longer allowed it. She loved playing games such as Uno or Scrabble, doing puzzles or listening to music. Myrtle loved country music, gospel and fiddle music. In fact, she played the juice harp, the mouth organ and the organ and entertained her family and friends for many years.
Myrtle was very involved in her community. She was a member of the Cody’s United Baptist Church and always involved if the Women’s Institute were hosting suppers or other events.
