    2. [S4] Obituary.
“Capt.” William T. Hancort, died Wednesday (June 28, 2000). He was born December 3, 1911 in Bridgeport, son of the late Frank and Mary (Scheck) Hancort. Capt. Hancort had been a resident of Avon since 1946 and was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Florence Harriet (Taylor) Hancort in 1989.
Capt. Hancort had been brought up in a family of sea captains and shipmasters. He was a master harbor pilot and was licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard for piloting. He worked the entire eastern seaboard, concentrating most of his work with large commercial shipping in the New Haven and Bridgeport harbors. His love of the sea was matched by his love of the countryside, his home and his family. Capt. Hancort retired in 1983. Following retirement he served as a volunteer at the UCONN Medical Center. In his later years he derived much pleasure from his hobby of model tug boat building. He was a long time member of the Avon Congregational Church, a member of the American Pilots Association and the Avon Golf Club.
Capt. Bill leaves many devoted family members, a step-daughter and her husband, Barbara and Ernest Rettig of Avon, their children, Peter Rettig and his wife Marilyn, and their children, Jordan and Taylor, all of West Hartford; Janet R. Emanuel of New Haven, and Debra Buzzell and her husband Thomas of Deerfield Beach, FL. He also leaves a beloved sister and her husband, Frances and William Kelkitis of Stratford; his god child and niece, Nancy Schneider and husband Fred of Oxford, and their children, Kyle, Ryan and Tara. He was predeceased by his sister, Myrtle Hlavacek.
There are no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, July 5, 2 p.m. at the Avon Congregational Church, 6 West Main Street, Avon, with the Rev. Ed Falsey officiating. Burial will be private. Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, Canton, has charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial donations in his memory to the Avon Congregational Church, 6 West Main Street, Avon, CT 06001 or The Alzheimer’s Association, Northern Connecticut Chapter, 443 Franklin Avenue, Hartford, CT 06114-2517.
