Robert J. Pedley was born June 12, 1927, at Ocheyedan, IA the son of Joe and Clara (Paisley) Pedley. Robert grew up on his family’s farm and attended country school and graduated from Ocheyedan High School. Prior to his high school graduation he served his country for one year in the United States Navy, overseas in the Philippines. Upon his return from the service, he finished his studies at OHS.
As a young man, Robert started farming. At the age of fourteen his father died in a farm accident. Robert and his younger brother, Merle, carried on the family’s farm, a profession he loved. On February 19, 1954, Robert was united in marriage to Luella Rueter at Ocheyedan. Over those years he and Luella made their home on three farms in the Ocheyedan area, where they raised their family. The last farm they lived on was Luella’s family farm. They retired and moved into Ocheyedan in 1999.
Robert was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church where he had served in many roles. He also was a 70-year member of the Wood-Miller American Legion Post No. 326 of Ocheyedan. Robert was a loving husband, caring father and grandfather. On July 13, 2021, Robert became a resident of Country View Manor in Sibley, where he died this past Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at the age of ninety-four.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Luella Pedley of Ocheyedan; their children: Cynthia (Greg) Range of Omaha, NE; Arlyn (Jan) Pedley of Ocheyedan; Lylah Kreis (companion, George Ruegg) of Roanoke, TX and Judy (Harlan) Bonnstetter of Bondurant, IA; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Elaine Gehl of Fulda, MN and Delores Rosenbrook of Lakeville, MN; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Clara; stepfather, Don Paisley; brother, Merle Pedley, sister-in-law, Sally Pedley; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Walter and Rose Rueter; brother-in-law, Meryl Rueter and grandson, Jason Barrie.
