Kenneth Elwood Harlow (Jan. 2, 1917 — March 19, 2007)
Kenneth Harlow, 90, of Albany died Monday at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis. He was born in Portland, the son of George Noble and Hazel Kirk (Hawkin) Harlow. He grew up in Portland. He farmed with horses in Hillsboro from 1937 to 1942.
Kenneth served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, in the 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. He had basic training at Fort Riley, Kan. He graduated from horseshoeing school at Fort Riley and also received an Expert Medal with mounted pistol. He served 2 1/4 years in the Pacific Theater. Kenneth was one of the honored veterans in the Albany Veterans Day Parade in 2005.
He worked with the Oregon State Board of Forestry replanting the Tillamook Burn in 1948-49, then worked at Lehman Hot Springs from 1949 to 1955. He worked at wastewater treatment plants in Pendleton for seven years, Newport for five years and Albany for 10 years, retiring in July 1980.
Kenneth met and married the love of his life, Hilda Hall, on Sept. 6, 1960, in Stevenson, Wash. They had been married for 43 years at the time of her death in 2003.
He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Knights of Pythias, Blue Mountain Model Railroad Club, Benton County Flying Club and Washington County Sheriff’s Posse.
Kenneth is survived by his daughters, Marie Meyers and Mary Alice Davison, both of Portland; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, James George Harlow.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hill Street Church of Christ, with committal services following at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens. Contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or SafeHaven Humane Society, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. S.W., Albany, OR 97321.
