Joan Marie Weeman, age 78, of Long Plains Road, passed away on Aug. 31, 2013 at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a period of declining health with a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Westbrook, Maine on Aug. 19, 1935, the daughter of the late Everett and Virginia (Bell) Emery, and was a 1953 graduate of S.D. Hanson High School. Beginning at the age of 18, Joan began her life of public service by being the Deputy Town Clerk for the town of Buxton. This was a position she held many times over the years and was currently holding the position. She has also served in many other capacities with the Town of Buxton including Registrar of Voters. Joan was involved with several Maine town and city clerks associations. During the early 1970’s, Joan worked for the Edward M. Elwell Insurance Agency. In 2008 Joan received the Lorraine Fleury Award, the 2006-2007 Buxton Annual Town Report was dedicated to her, she was the 2008 Buxton Community Days Parade Grand Marshall, and was the 1990 Certified Town Clerk of Maine. In 2012, she was awarded as Maine Deputy Town Clerk of the Year. She is the second recipient of this award. She was also involved with community organizations such the South Buxton Cemetery Association-Board of Directors, Buxton/Hollis Historical Society, Buxton Powder Puffs Ladies Investment Club, Buxton Grange and was a member of the Buxton Center Baptist Church. Joan enjoyed camping and attending agricultural fairs-especially the Fryeburg Fair which she has attended since she was a young child. Joan was involved with camping organizations such as the family Camper and RVer’s and the Good Sam Club. She is predeceased by a son- Ronnie Weeman; and a brother Erland Emery. Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years- Robert Weeman Sr.; sons- Robert “Bud” Weeman Jr of Hollis, and Ryan Weeman and his wife Zip of Gorham; daughters- Rebecca Meader of Gray and Roxanne Knowles and her husband David of Durham; brothers- Rick Emery and his wife Melissa, Alan Emery and his wife Stacy, and Robert Emery and his wife Edith, all of Buxton; grandchildren- Benjamin, Christopher, Stacy, and Andy Weeman, Aaron Meader, Kira and Kevin Knowles; great grandchildren- Aidan, Reilly, Darren, Ethan, Kayley, Keegan, and Kamyrn; brother-in-law- Cecil Low of Saco; aunts- Mildred Emery of FL and Betty Baker of Fryeburg; many cousins; and many dear friends. Joan’s family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Dugan, DO and his staff for their care and support. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday Sept. 3 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, located on the corners of Rts. 202 and 4A (13 Portland Rd) in Buxton (Bar Mills). A funeral service officiated by Rev. Laura Holt-Haslam will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM at the Buxton Center Baptist Church, located on Rt. 22 (Long Plains Road). Burial will be at South Buxton Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Buxton Center Baptist Church, 938 Long Plains Road, Buxton, Maine 04093.
