    1. [S4] Obituary.
BREWSTERAlice B. Camp, 98, a former longtime South Yarmouth resident, died Jan. 20, 2008, at Epoch Senior Healthcare Center, following a period of declining health.
Mrs. Camp was born in Ridgefield, Conn., where she grew up, raised her family and lived until 1972. Upon retiring that year from a teaching career in nearby New York state, she fulfilled a lifelong dream, moving to Cape, where she had often vacationed. Alice quickly became a devoted beachgoer and student of local traditions, including the annual fall ritual of searching out wild beach plums for jelly. She also pursued a passion for art, sketching and painting many Cape scenes and landmarks and creating handmade crafts for family and friends.
She left South Yarmouth for Michigan in 1994 to be closer to family, returning in 2006 to reside in the Brewster home of her daughter and son-in-law.
Mrs. Camp graduated in 1928 from Danbury (Conn.) Normal School and taught briefly before her marriage to George B. Camp, a high school classmate. Following his death in 1946, she resumed teaching elementary school. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Danbury State College in 1953. She was known among colleagues for her commitment to educating young children, and delighted in relating accomplishments of former students, even years later.
Alice is survived by her daughter, Mary E. Scott of Brewster; two sons, George B. Camp Jr. of Royal Oak, Mich., and Charles B. Camp of Georgetown, Ky.; a niece, Doris Broshkevitch of Williamsport, Pa.; a nephew, Richard Benjamin of Jensen Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Peter M. Camp of New Fairfield, Conn.; a brother, Emerson Benjamin of Ridgefield, Conn.; and a sister, Dorothy Horn of Waterbury, Conn.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, at Our Lady of the Cape Parish, 468 Stony Brook Road, Brewster, followed at 11 a.m. by a funeral Mass. A memorial service will be held Jan. 29 in Ridgefield, Conn., and interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ridgefield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alice Camp’s memory are suggested to the Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association, 90 East Ridge, Ridgefield, CT 06877 (www.ridgefieldvna.org), or The Lourdes Campus, 2300 Watkins Lake Road, Waterford, MI 48328 (www.lourdescampus.com.).
