John Walters Miller, 80, of Seal Rock died Oct. 13, 2002 at his home.
He was born March 26, 1922 in Corvallis. He graduated from Waldport High School in 1940. He married Sarah June Andrews in 1947. They later divorced. In 1948, he graduated from Oregon State College, now Oregon State University, Corvallis, with a bachelor’s degree in science. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1945 and 1946 during World War II, and in 1951 to early 1954 during the Korean Conflict. He was a longshoreman for more than 30 years, and was a member of International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 53, Newport. (Lincoln Co.)
He married Karolee "Kay" F. Hallowell July 1, 1972 in Reno, Nev. He was a member of the Eagles, American Legion, and the Moose lodge. He enjoyed hunting, beachcombing, collecting agates, clamming, and travel.
Survivors include his wife, Karolee Miller; daughters and sons-in-law Ann Miller and René Bustamonté of Newport and Oaxaca, Mexico, Nancy Miller and Jeff Haas of San Jose, Calif., and Trudy and Steve Branstiter of Nyssa; a son, Doug MacDuffee of Seal Rock; and six grandchildren, Aurora Erlander-Miller, Julia Haas, Ryan Haas, Logan Branstiter, Paige Branstiter, and Natalie Kay MacDuffee.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall, 424 W. Olive St., Newport. Bateman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
