MARCH, William DesBarres — 74, Halifax, died in the VG Site, QEII, on December 10, 2004. Son of the late John Edgar and Marie (DesBarres) March, he was born in Montreal and graduated in history from Bishop’s University. He joined the Chronicle Herald and Mail-Star in 1950 as a reporter, attended Acadia University, and worked as a writer for the Canadian National Railways in Montreal and Toronto. He edited the St. Croix Courier in St. Stephen, N.B., before returning to the Herald newspapers in 1957 to serve in several news and editorial capacities until his retirement in 1991. He wrote the book “Red Line: The Chronicle Herald and The Mail-Star, 1875-1954”.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Church) March, Halifax; sons, John (Dominique), Ottawa; Peter (Martha), Columbus, Ohio; Hugh, Toronto; daughters, Sarah (Tim Curry), Bedford; Catherine, Brantford, Ont.; sister, Ann Marie (Peter Clemens), Antigua and Ottawa; grandchildren, Matthew, Hilary and Hannah March, Columbus; Thomas and Benjamin March, Ottawa; Patrick, Noah and Matthew Curry, Bedford. He was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Martha Lousie; third son, Richard Barnes and brother, John DesBarres, in childhood.
Visitation will take place in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Windsor Street, from 5-8 p.m. today. A memorial service will be held in the Cathedral Church of All Saints on Monday, December 13 at 2 p.m. Private interment will be in the family plot in St. John’s Cemetery.
