JOSEPH FREDERIC CHURCH
October 18, 1929 – July 20, 2018
Surrounded by his family, Joseph Frederic Church passed away peacefully in Toronto following a brief illness. Joe was predeceased by his wife Marjory (Smith) in 1985. He is survived by his children and their families: Pamela of Shelburne, ON; Douglas (Donna) and their children Julia and Spencer of Windsor, ON; Beverley (Thom Parker) and their children Alison and Jackson of Toronto, ON; and Patricia Brown (Don) and their children Emma, Sophia and Maya of New York. He is also survived by his brother-in-law William Smith of Ottawa, ON. Joe was predeceased by all his siblings and their spouses: John (Ruth) of Saint John, NB; Hugh (Victoria), of Saint John, NB; David (Marion) of Toronto, ON; and Barbara (William March) of Halifax, NS. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews across Canada.
Joseph was born in Hartford, CT, the youngest of five children of the late Vivien and Elbert Church of Saint John, NB. He was educated at Rothesay Consolidated School, Saint John High School and the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton), obtaining a BSc. in 1950 and a MSc. in 1954 in Geology.
In 1951, Joe began a 37 year employment with Inco Ltd. (Vale) in the Field Exploration department. In conjunction with a host of associates, many of whom would become lifelong friends, Joe participated in the discovery and development of nickel deposits in Ferguson Lake, NWT; the Thompson Nickel Belt, Manitoba; the Uitkomst nickel deposit Transvaal, South Africa; the McClean Lake uranium deposits, Saskatchewan; the Big Trout Lake chromium deposits Ontario; the Musselwhite gold deposits, Ontario; the Douay Township gold deposit, Metagami, Quebec; and the Golden Pond gold ore bodies in Casa-Berardi Township, Quebec. Joe appreciated his success, recognizing that few geologists are fortunate in having been associated with this many varied mineral deposits. After his retirement in 1988, Joe conducted a consulting business from his Sudbury base.
Joe was a passionate golfer, beginning with a junior membership and caddying at Riverside Country Club, Rothesay, NB and including a decades long membership at Idylwylde Golf & Country Club in Sudbury, ON. He participated in many Inco and club tournaments and continued to compete as a senior golfer.
Joe was also a loyal friend and a devoted father and grandfather. He left his family with an appreciation of what he considered the finer things in life: a lake view, a good meal and a daily cribbage game. Joe’s mischievous sense of humour and boyish charm will be forever remembered by all his friends and family.
A celebration of Joe’s life will take place on October 13, 2018 in Sudbury, ON. If desired, donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario, www.alzheimer.ca/on.
Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home.
