John Duane Applegate, a former resident of DeWitt, tragically passed away in a car accident on March 30, 2011. John was traveling through Utah on his way home to Snohomish, Washington when the accident occurred. Born in Syracuse, NY, on January 15, 1938, he was the son of Charles Foster and Bernice Arabelle (Bloser) Applegate, both deceased. John’s career as an electrical engineer spanned four decades, and he retired from Boeing in 2010. He was a graduate of Fayetteville High School, Northwestern University and the University of New Mexico. He is survived by his wife, Lia, and four children, Paul of Detroit, MI, Philip (Trish) of Manassas, VA, Scott (Sara) of Sterling, VA, and Riska of Snohomish, WA. Also survived by four grandchildren, Jack, Georgia, Kara and Preston; two brothers, William (Lois) of Jamesville and James (Mary Jane) of Cazenovia; three nephews; one niece; and two cousins. John Duane Applegate, a resident of Snohomish, Washington, tragically passed away at age 73 on March 30, 2011 while traveling through Utah. John was born in Syracuse, NY on January 15, 1938, son of Charles Foster and Arabelle Bernice (Bloser) Applegate. John graduated from Fayetteville High School, where he played trumpet in the High School band. Following high school, he graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and then earned a Master’s degree at the University of New Mexico while working for Sandia Labs in Electrical Engineering as well. His career afforded him many opportunities, and his employers included Texas Instruments as a Program Manager of multiple defense programs and as an executive with Paradyne, American Magnetics and RF Monolithics as President and CEO. Later in his career he served as a senior consultant with Scitor, IPTN and as an Associate Technical Fellow with Boeing Commercial Airplane Group with whom he retired in 2010. He was an avid and active enthusiast of photography, motorcycling, boating, flying, camping and exploring ghost towns and mining railroads in the western United States. He met his wife and daughter in Indonesia while working at IPTN (Indonesian Aerospace) as an expat working abroad. John is survived by his loving wife, Lia Applegate and was a devoted father of four children; son Paul, of Detroit, MI; son Philip (Trish) of Manassas, VA; son Scott (Sara), of Sterling, VA, and daughter Riska, in WA. He has 4 grandchildren; Jack, Georgia, Kara, and Preston. He is survived of two younger brothers, William (Lois), and Jim (Mary Jane) Applegate. Friends and colleagues are encouraged to join the family for a memorial service Sunday, April 17, 2011, at 12:00 noon. The service will be held in the Life Celebration Center at Purdy & Waters Funeral home, 409 Filbert Rd., Lynnwood, WA 98037.
