Sister Michaella Ballard Longtime Michigan educator.
Sister Michaella Ballard, who worked in Michigan schools for 36 years, died Friday at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 92 and had been a member of the Adrian Dominican Sisters for 69 years. She was also called Veronica Marie Ballard. Beginning as an elementary school teacher, she taught at St. Dominic in Detroit and St. Mary in St. Clair in 1948-51, then switched to high school work. She taught at St. Augustine and St. Ambrose, both in Detroit; St. Mary, Royal Oak; SS Peter and Paul, Ruth, in the Thumb; Our Lady of Sorrows, Farmington, and St. Norbert, Inkster. She was also the principal at St. Augustine in the 1950s. She ended her career in Port Huron, first teaching in the, Port Huron Area Schools, then in the Port Huron Adult Education Program. Retiring in 1987, she moved to the center. Sister Michaella was born in Detroit and graduated from St. Theresa High School there. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Siena Heights University in Adrian and a master’s in education at Loyola University in Chicago. She also taught in Chicago. Survivors include nephews. ; Friends may call from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the center, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, where a vigil prayer will be at 7 p.m. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the center, with burial in the cemetery on the center grounds. The family suggests memorial donations to the Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, Adrian 49221.
