      WANTAGE — Frederick “Jack” Skellenger, 78, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at the Kindred Hospital of New Jersey in Dover.
       Born on Aug. 24, 1935, in Franklin to the late Harry and Ethel Skellenger, Jack lived in Sussex County all of his life. He served in the National Guard during the Korean War. Jack was employed as a foreman with the Sussex County Department of Public Works, where he worked for 30 years before retiring in 1999. He had been a member of the Sussex Fire Department since 1969 and was a former member of the Colesville Gun Club and the Virgin Acres Gun Club.
       He was predeceased by his first wife, Janet, in 1995; his great-grandson, Alex Skellenger, in 2009; his great-granddaughter, Brianna Mackerley, in 2011; and his sisters, Joan and Sheila.
       Jack is survived by his wife, Rose; his son, Terry; his two daughters, Debra Gould, of Sparrowbush, N.Y., and Becky Kinney, of Montague; his grandchildren, Craig, of Sussex, John and Michael, of Sparrowbush, N.Y., Sarah, of Montague, and Grace, of Wantage; four great-grandchildren; and his sister, Marilyn Howell, of Hamburg.
       Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the Pinkel Funeral Home, 31 Bank St. (Route 23), Sussex. Interment will follow at Clove Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects to the family on Sunday, Feb. 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Sussex Fire Department services will be held on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
       In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Sussex Fire Department, 25 Loomis Ave., Sussex, NJ 07461. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.pinkelfuneralhome.com.
