Two Men Killed in Crash Through Ice —
RATHDRUM, Ida., Jan. 18 — Bodies of two men, Paul Skinner, 30, and Edward Roth, 32, had been recovered from the Upper Twin Lake today. The two men attempted to cross the ice-covered lake but fell through the ice. They had arranged with Mrs. Skinner, who remained on the north bank, to signal by flashlight when their destination had been reached. Mrs. Skinner later heard what might have been the cries for help, but, seeing a group of people ice skating on the lake, determined it was the skaters she had heard. A light she believed to have been the awaited signal of safety was also that of a skater. Confusion resulting from the two mininterpretations resulted in delay of a rescue party being sent out for the men. It was not known for 24 hours that they had not reached the opposite shore safety.
Discovery of Roth’s coat on the ice beside a hole indicated he had suceeded in crawling onto thicker ice and then jumped back into the freezing water in a vain effort to save Skinner, losing his own life in the attempt. The bodies were discovered some 350 feet from shore.
