McHenry, Thomas — At Jasper Cottage, Demioselle Creek (Albert Co.) there departed this life Wednesday April 5, 1893, a men whose experience of the world was varied and remarkable indeed. Thomas McHenry was born in Fredericton on May 20th, 1819.
His father was a sergeant major 74th Regt., an Irishman from county Antrim and his mother from Dublin, her maiden name was CARROLTON. He received a good education and in early life followed mercantile pursuits, and at one time built and owned vessels in St. John. In 1854 he conducted a general store with hardware as a specialty in St. John. For a time he edited a paper called the
Colonial Empire and subsequenlty the
Christian Visitor. In 1863 he removed to Salisbury and there managed an oil business for an English company with headquarters in Boston, Mass. From there he removed to Mary’s Point, Albert Co. in 1865 where with C.D. ARCHIBALD, he promoted the Salisbury and Albert Railway. He also edited the
Eastern Advocate, now the
Moncton Times. He organized a company to burn lime and sank all the means he possessed. He was a Freemason but had not been in connection with a lodge for some years. He used his pen and tongue freely in the advocacy of Confederation, as also in influencing public opinion in favor of the I.C.R.
In youth he spent some time at St. Andrews and married Miss Jerusha MASTERS of Bath, Maine by whom he had a family; two of whom are living, Mrs. William JARVIE of Brooklyn, whose husband is a dentist and sister Lena McHENRY of St. John’s Hospital, New York. His second wife was a daughter of Rev. I.E. BILL, whose six daughters are also living: Mrs. CRANDALL of Nova Scotia; Mrs. SMITH of Ottawa; Mrs. GARDINER, Boston, Mass.; Mrs. Benj. VAUGHAN, St. Martins; Mrs. TRASK, Washington Territory; and Mrs. H.J. OLIVE, Carleton. His third and surviving wife, Margret O’CONNOR came from the Emerald Isle and has four sons and four daughters, one of whom is in the United States.
