- [S4] Obituary.
Marion W. (White) Light, R.N., died on April 2, 2021, at Ivany Place, Northwood Bedford, where she had been a resident after having lived most of her 94 years in the Annapolis Valley. Born in Berwick, Nova Scotia on June 22, 1926 to James Edward and Mildred Vivian (Skinner) White, she spent her youth and early schooling in Cambridge, Kings County, graduating from the Kings County Academy in 1944. She entered the Registered Nursing program at the Victoria General Hospital and graduated with the Class of 1948. She continued the nursing work she loved all through her life at hospitals in Hamilton, Ontario and the Annapolis Valley, and for thirty-three years at the Annapolis General Hospital, retiring in 1989. On December 24, 1951, she married her beloved sailor, Charles Edward “Ted” Light, of Winnipeg, moving from Halifax to the former CFB Cornwallis, and settled on a farming homestead in Clementsport. They were proud parents to Joanne M. Light, Cornwallis Park, and Lorraine E. Brenton (Ron), Halifax; and to granddaughters, Angela Brenton Carter (David), Tulsa, OK, and Jan Brenton Holley (Brad), Dartmouth. Later in life, she joyfully welcomed great-grandchildren Adella Carter, Essen Holley, Simon Carter and Theron Holley into the world. Marion will be remembered by cherished family members including Betty Magee (Cambridge); nephew Eric Haynes (Ellen), Deep Cove; cousins Richard (Joanne) Skinner, Cambridge; Elizabeth Hamilton (Chris), Lunenburg; Barbara (Bob) Williams, Texas; Doreen Marshall, South Carolina; great-nieces and nephews Lisa Mills; Angie Lantaigne; Steven, Mark and Wade Haynes and Shelley Pride. Not forgotten are Michael Magee and Nancy Mcisaac and Ted’s family in western Canada, Bruce, Grant and Alan Shepard, Lorna Quine, and Eric Bowling. Close to her heart were her many friends. She was a natural storyteller, enchanting her children with “stories out of your mouth” as they called it; regaling her audience of peers with a humorous speech for a colleague’s retirement or a Robbie Burns dinner; a short story about an eventful happening at the hospital (all names changed); an essay on her love for the apple industry of her Annapolis Valley roots; or a newspaper article on the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, which her husband attended and about which he wrote to her. She enjoyed bridge, curling, quilting, sewing, knitting, gardening, the local “Lorettes” (ladies’ singing, dancing group) and ABC Choral Group (where she loved to harmonize, singing alto or tenor without needing the notes). She served on the Boards of the Fundy Branch, Registered Nurses Association of NS; Federal Superannuates Association of NS; and the Annapolis Branch of the VON. She was a lifelong member of the Clementsport United Baptist Church (serving as clerk and in the choir) and had been a leader for the Girl Guides and Rangers of Canada. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband after 43 years; infant daughter, Barbara; sister, Florence Haynes; niece, Myrna Reid; foster brother, Gordon Magee; cousins John and Bill Skinner; her husband’s sisters, Mary Shepard and Margaret Johansen, and his nephew Craig Bowling. Joanne and Lorraine would like to thank the personal care givers, nurses and staff at Ivany Place for their wonderful care, compassion and steadfast service over the past 7-1/2 years. Please feel free to make a donation in Marion’s memory to a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service and reception will be held later in spring or summer in the Clementsport/Cornwallis area when safe to do so.
