Charles Judson Skinner of Ottawa, in his 97th year, died peacefully Friday, March 1, 2019, 9:20 p.m. at his residence in Thorncliffe Place, Nepean. Charlie was born in South Berwick, Nova Scotia, August 20, 1922. He grew up around Nova Scotia, joined the Army Signal Corps in 1941 and served in NS until 1951 when he and his family were transferred to the Signals Base in Kingston, then to Ottawa’s National Defence Headquarters where he served 35 years until retirement. He was a former member of the Canadian Legion in Bells Corners. He liked to read and spend time with his dogs and his family, exploring the countryside, and in later years travelled and cruised with his beloved wife Dorothea Mascoe Freeborn Skinner, aka Grannie. Charlie’s first wife, Thelma A. C. Creelman, and mother of their three children, predeceased him. He was the son of the late Edward Charles and Annie Mae (Cogswell) Skinner. Brothers Vernon, Harry, Ralph, Lloyd and Scott also predeceased him as did son-in-law Tom Calow and grandchildren Stephen Chase and Sam and Ben Skinner. He is survived by three children, Diane Chase (Barry) of Dartmouth, NS, Carol Calow of Amherstview, Ontario and David of Ottawa and step-daughter Bonnie Campbell (Ron) of Nepean. He is survived by seven grandchildren: Sharon Chase (Mike Dort) of Dartmouth NS; Sandra Chase of Dartmouth, NS; Susan Donald (Ross) of Cole Harbour, NS; Jeffrey Calow (Rachael) of Boston, Massachusetts; Catherine Hudson (Steven) of Amherstview, Ontario, Wade Skinner of Ottawa and Steven Campbell (Stacey) of Waterloo, Ontario. Charlie is also survived by nine great-grandchildren: Chase and Kathleen Donald, Malcolm and Charlotte Dort, Nick and Sam Calow, Sarah and Megan Hudson and Mady Campbell. The family wishes to express their thanks to David for being there for Charlie, as his sisters were far away, and to Bonnie for her devoted care as well as to the staff and management of Thorncliffe Place Seniors Residence, his many doctors and to Veterans Affairs, who provided exceptional support. Friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue, Ottawa, on Wednesday, March 6th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Thursday, March 7th at 11:00 a.m., when the service will be held.
