Ruth Evelyn, daughter of Herbert and Aura (Gill) Starner, was born May 26, 1927, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. She grew up at Shelby and graduated from Shelby Community School in 1945. Ruth then attended Buena Vista College and Drake University where she received a B.A. in Education. She then taught country school at numerous locations before settling at Audubon County Schools where she taught 6th and 4th grades. On June 4, 1948, Ruth was united in marriage with Roy Frank Soll at her parents’ home in Shelby. Two sons were born to this union. Ruth and Roy made their home in Aspinwall. Ruth continued teaching in Audubon until her retirement in 1989. After celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 1998, Ruth and Roy built a home and moved into Manning. Ruth was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was active as an elder and with the Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of the Audubon Elementary Retired Teachers Organization and the American Legion Auxiliary of which she is a Past-president. Throughout the years, Ruth has enjoyed reading and fishing. For more than 45 years, Ruth bowled in a league in Manning. On Saturday, December 12, 2009, Ruth died at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa, following a short battle with cancer. Ruth’s family includes: her husband Roy Soll of Manning; two sons James Soll and wife Charlotte of Audubon and Allen Soll and wife Sue of Tekama, Nebraska; four grandchildren: Ron Soll and wife Sue of Manning; Barbi Elmquist and husband Dave of Audubon; Adam Soll and Evan Soll, both of Omaha, Nebraska; four great-grandchildren: Jessica Soll of Carroll; Jenna Soll of Manning; Alex and Abby Elmquist of Audubon; two sisters Beulah Breen of Wheatridge, Colorado and Helen Schilling of Yuma, Arizona; a brother Harold Starner of Denver, Colorado; and by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Russell and Eugene Starner.
