BREW, Virginia Stewart 73, a St. Petersburg native, died at home May 22. She was the daughter of the late Eleanor Pearson Stewart Marr and the late Fred Stewart, former principal of St. Petersburg High School, after whom the school’s Stewart Field was named. A lifetime Episcopalian and member of the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Virginia was active in the church’s altar guild and managed the Cathedral Book store for a number of years. She was a member of the Junior League of St. Petersburg, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Historical Museum of St. Petersburg, and the Bucketeers Club. Most recently she had enjoyed volunteering at the Weedon Island Preserve, and for many years prior, at St. Anthony’s Hospital. Virginia graduated from St. Petersburg High School, attended Duke University and graduated from Miami University at Oxford, OH. She received a master’s degree in English from the University of Florida. She taught at Madeira Beach Elemen-tary School, & later taught reading at North Shore Elementary School. A voracious reader, she had a talent for writing as well, in which she often demonstrated her droll sense of humor. She adored beach combing for shells and had an extensive collection of shells from all over the world. "Another passion was cats. She was never without a cat," says her daughter Nancy. She loved to travel and had been abroad several times.
Virginia is survived by her husband of 49 years, Tom. Besides her daughter, Nancy Brew (Mark Schultz) of Vancouver, B.C., she will also be missed by sons, Richard (Natalie), Fayetteville, NC & Stewart (Katie), St. Petersburg; grandsons, Daniel, Owen and Kamryn; brother, John Stewart (Anna), Treasure Island, and a host of friends.
Services will take place Saturday, May 30 at 11 am, at St. Peter’s Cathedral, 140 Fourth St. N, with a reception with the family to follow after the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Peter’s Cathedral, Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, or the SPCA.
