      Pon Alvia Tackett, Jr. 79 of Palestine, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 3, 2010, in Tyler, Texas. He was a precious, hard working and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was born December 14, 1930, in Indianola, MS., to Pon Tackett, Sr., and Mary Braswell Tackett.
       At a young age, the family moved to Yazoo City where he attended school. He was a star football player for Yazoo City High Indians. Later he graduated from high school there and went on to play football for Holmes Junior College where in 2000 he and his teammates were inducted into the Hall of Fame, because their team was the only team that had won the State Championship in the history of the college. He joined the Air Force in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He served as a fireman while stationed in Oklahoma City. He was later transferred to Fort Sumter, South Carolina where he played on an Air Force football team. Not long afterwards he received orders for Wiesbaden Air Force/Army base in Germany. He continued playing for an Air Force football team. While there he was cleared for secret service and worked in the photo lab. Pon married Marilyn Douglass on June 11, 1962. At that time he owned and operated a service station in Minter City, MS. Shortly afterwards he managed a cotton and soybean plantation. In 1972 the couple moved back to Palestine where he spent the remainder of his career as a machinist at Union Pacific Railroad where he retired in 1996. He was a member of Lone Pine Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and as Chairman of that body for a number of years.
       Mr. Tackett was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty Skinner and brother, Col. Gwin Tackett. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Douglass Tackett of Palestine, one daughter Traci Caroline Tackett of Palestine, one sister Nina Ruth Brown of Montana, two brothers Robert Tackett of Mississippi and Marion Tackett of Tennessee, three grandchildren; Meredith Tackett, Cameron Lynch and Hollieann Lynch. Pallbearers will be Ed Johnson, Billy Don Maddox, Paul Poe, Tom Poe, Jody Radford and Bob Tackett. Honorary pallbearers are: Tom Brown, Bradley Tackett, “Chip” Tackett, Dan Tackett, A.B. Calcote, Dickie Douglass, Horace Lee Douglass, Robert Humphrey, Gary Calcote, Harris Lohmeyer and The Deacons of Lone Pine Baptist Church.
       Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Friday, April 9, at Lone Pine Baptist Church in Palestine with Dr. Ron Sloan and Rev. Ray Biggerstaff officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey and Foster, Palestine. Condolence calls will be received from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at Bailey and Foster.
