BUXTON — Ira G. York, 70 of the Chicopee Road died Thursday in a Portland hospital after a brief illness. He was born here, the son of Wilbur G. and Eva Rose Emery York. He graduated frome the Samuel D. Hansen High School here. He was employed at the South Portland Shipyard during World War II. Mr. York retired in 1977 from Southworth Inc., where he worked as a machinist. He was one of the founders and first fire chief of the Chicopee Fire Department, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in West Buxton. He is survived by his wife, Loraine Emmons York; five sons, Stephen I., Dana A., Timothy G., and Mattew D., all of Buxton, and Galen M. of Plattsburgh Air Force Base, New York; a daughter, Geneva L. Shane of Gorham; a sister, Dora Appleby of Buxton; two half sisters, Carrie Knight and Ruby Milliken, both of Buxton; two half brothers, Roger York and William York, both of Buxton; and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Neal and York Funeral Home, 76 State St., Gorham. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Buxton.
