BUXTON — Bernard Jason Knight, 87, born in Buxton, Maine on March 18, 1923, son of Erland J. and Carrie M. York Knight, passed away on April 21, 2010 at his home. He attended Buxton schools and graduated from Buxton High School in 1942. Bernard also graduated from Gorham Normal Schools night school machinist program in 1942. In January of 1943 he joined the U.S. Army and served guarding the locks in Sal St. Marie, Canada and on the Mexican border near El Paso, TX before becoming one of Pattons boys serving in the 76th Division of the spearhead across Europe. He was one of the volunteers in the 76th Division at the end of WWII who went into the town of Smollen, located in eastern Germany to liberate civilians from the German Army. Mr. Knight was also one of the ten men who stood rear guard in the coldest weather ever recorded in Europe at the break out of the Battle of the Bulge. At this time he promised himself that if he ever got back to the farm on the hill in Buxton, that he would never leave again. He was a farmer, horse and cattle dealer, and a metal/antique refinisher during his lifetime.In 1942 he won the 4-H Fitting and Showmanship Award at the Fryeburg Fair. He was a member of Buxton Masonic Lodge #115 AF & AM, volunteered with Buxton Little League at its beginning, Buxton Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. He is predeceased by his parents; his wife of 47 years- Emily Brittain Junkins Knight, two sisters- Bernice Knight Wescott and Beulah Knight Norberg; and two step children- Arnold Junkins and Lucille Junkins Shepard. He is survived by brothers- Kenneth E. Knight of Buxton and Nealand Knight and his wife Sandra of FL; step children- Wade G. Junkins and his wife Ernestine of Waterboro and Arlene E. Charles of Burlington, Ontario, Canada; children- Erlane Knight Sargent and her husband Dwain of North Conway, NH, Bernard Jason Knight II and his wife Susan of Buxton, Erlon C. Knight and his wife Terri of Standish, and Dale A. Knight and his wife Estelle of Buxton; multiple nieces and nephews, ten grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be on Friday evening, APRIL 23 !!, from 6-8 PM at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, located on the corners of Rts. 202 and 4A (13 Portland Rd) in Buxton (Bar Mills).
