    2. [S4] Obituary.
Norman O. “Normie” Neiburger, 89, died Friday, Nov. 4, 1988 in his Lafayette home. Mr. Neiburger will be remembered in Lafayette for his many contributions. He co-founded the Downtown Lafayette Gridiron Club; he was a former Lafayette city councilman for two terms; he was a well-known independent insurance agent, and a fine organist.
He was born March 15, 1899, in Chicago and moved to Lafayette with his family when his father opened a fur business here. He graduated from Lafayette High School and he attended Purdue University. When he was a young man, he was a sportswriter for the "Journal and Courier". It was during these years that he became an acive supporter of Purdue athletics; he was a 25-year member of the John Purdue Club.
When Mr. Neiburger started in the insurance business, he was an independent agent who walked door-to-door selling policies. When the business flourished, he opened the Neiburger Insurance Agency which he owned and operated for over 35 years. He worked with Lafayette Insurance Associates for three years before selling his business to MBAH Insurance Co. in 1983.
His marriage was Oct. 17, 1937 to Hope Woodworth, and she died in 1964. Although Mr. Neiburger was a widower for many years, his positive sense of humor and self-reliant attitude allowed him to be an active leader in Lafayette his entire life. He loved to play the organ and golf; as recently as three years ago he golfed at the Elks Country Club and played the organ there just a few weeks ago. It was his wish to remain at home even when his health condition became serious; his family and friends made this wish possible. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and attended Covenant Presbyterian Church in West Lafayette. He was a 66-year member of Elks Lodge 143, and was the organist there for many years. He was also a member of Eagles Lodge 347 and Phi Delta Kappa honorary fraternity.
Surviving are two sons, N.A. ’Lucky’ Neiburger of Lafayette and Thomas W. Neiburger of Wheaton, IL; a daughter Lee Etta (husband Ronald) Crider of Lafayette; and one sister, Mrs. Jetta Holland of Plano, TX; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
