James N. Carr, 85, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2014, in his home. He was born December 31, 1928, in Mount Morris, Illinois; the son of Clifford J. and Gertrude I. (Jones) Carr. He married Lois Jean Brantner on April 15, 1950. He worked in sales for Smith Oil Corp. and Goodyear, and also was a foreman for Rockford Blacktop. James was a member of the United Church of Byron and was also a former member of the Tebala Shriners, the Masons, and the Byron Lions Club. While he enjoyed these activities, his main focus was always his family. Survivors include his wife, Lois Jean of Byron; children, Steve (Deb) Carr of Vernon Hills, IL, Vicky (Jerry) Whitchard of Centerville, TN, and Kevin (Joanne) Carr of Byron; siblings, Evelyn Dirksen of Durand, IL and Larry (Sally) Carr of Leaf River; grandchildren, Douglas Carr, Caitlin Carr, April Burleson, Andrew (Brandy) Lahr, Katie England, Ashley (Michael) Cuddy, Anthony Wittemeyer, and Megan Carr; and great-grandchildren, Adrianna and Jared. James was predeceased by his parents; brother, Arthur; and sister, Marvelene. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014, at Farrell Holland Gale Funeral Home, 506 W. Merchant St. in Byron, with Pastor Randy Snider of the First Baptist Church of Byron officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery. A memorial is established in his name.
