QMCM Master Chierf Robert W. Coleman, 86, of Swanzey died at his home Nov. 8, 2012, following a period of failing health.
He was born in West Pittston, Pa., Dec. 18, 1925, son of Williard and Thelma (Pembridge) Coleman. After graduating from the West Pittston High School, where he lettered in basketball, he joined the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. Throughout his Naval career, he traveled three times around the world, attaining the rank of QMCM and teaching at the Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, R.I. After 20 years he retired to begin another long career with the U.S. Post Office, first in Newark and Parsippany, N.J., then moving to the Keene facility in the early 1970s. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Swanzey, Gordon-Bissell American Legion Post 4 in Keene, the U.S.S. Albany Association, and The Fleet Reserve. He was also a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Keene.
Bob enjoyed motorcycling but the most important thing to him was his grandchildren whom he loved being with and videotaping their seemingly every move.
Survivors include two sons, Brian A. Coleman and his wife, Nancy H., of Swanzey and Richard J. Coleman and his wife, Rene, of Kea’au, Hawaii; a sister, Sara (Sally) St. John and her husband, Frank, of Largo Fla.; his sister-in-law Joyce Coleman of Parsippany, N.J.; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
His brother, Kenneth J. Coleman, died this past June, and his former wife, Ruth (Junkins) Kasprak, with whom he remained a lifelong friend, also died earlier.
Calling hours for Mr. Coleman will be held Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, Route 32, Swanzey Center. Friends are invited. A full military service will be held following the calling hours, at 7 p.m. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made in memory of Mr. Coleman to: the Neighbor Helping Neighbor Fund, c/o the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 10041, Swanzey 03446. The Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Keene is in charge of the arrangements.
