BELFAST —
Ray Nickerson died peacefully Feb. 15, 2007, at Waldo County General Hospital. He was born April 7, 1927, in Belfast, the son of Elmer and Georgie (Daggett) Nickerson. Ray was an Army staff sergeant stationed in the Phillipines during World WarII. He graduated from Crosby High School, Belfast and received his Bachelor of Science in accounting from Husson College. He opened what is now Nickerson P.A., Belfast, in 1954, and was past president of the Maine Society of CPAs. He was a member of the Anah Temple Shrine and a past Master of the Masonic Lodge. Ray was an avid golfer and a past president of the Northport Golf Club. He loved football and swimming at the family camp at Pitcher Pond, but his two real passions in life were his family and music, particularly jazz. He played drums in many dance bands and passed his love for music, particularly jazz. He played drums in many dance bands and passed his love for music to his children and grandchildren.
Ray is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maxine (Bachelder) Nickerson; his daughter, Kathryn Bowman; his sons, Michael and wife, Meg, and Steven and wife, Lisa; and his grandchildren, Amanda, Caitlin, Jared, Mallorie and Tayler. He is also survived by his brother, Harland and wife, Katherine; and his sisters, Gena Shute, Teresa Crosby, Edith Nickerson, June Russ and husband, Ulmer, Dorothy Moody and husband, Chet, and Avis Metcalf and husband, Larry; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at First Church in Belfast, 8 Court St., Belfast, with the Rev. Joel Krueger and the Rev. David Pouchot officiating. Immediately after will be a celebration of Ray’s life at Waldo County Shrine Club, Northport Avenue, Belfast. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ray’s name to either Waldo County Hospice, care of Waldo County General Hospital, 118 Northport Ave., Belfast, ME 04915 or Waldo County Shrine Charitable Trust, P.O. Box 285, Belfast, ME 04915. Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
