Russell “Russ” A. Wheelock of 2 Waterman Circle died in St. Johnsbury on Tuesday, Aug. 11,1 992, at the age of 80 years. Born in St. Johnsbury on Sept. 10, 1911, he was the son of Almond and Philomene (Bourgeois) Wheelock.
He was a 1929 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, where he received the Dwayne Sherrer Award in 1987. Mr. Wheelock was employed by the Caledonian Record until 1939, and later represented the Home Economic Service Corp. in New York City. He owned Cowles Press in St. Johnsbury for 10 years and later opened the Wheelock Real Estate Agency in St. Johnsbury with his wife, Ruth. Mr. Wheelock was a director of the Vermont Association of Realtors, member and vice chair of the Vermont Real Estate Commission, past president of St. Johnsbury Chamber of Commerce, founder and director of St. Johnsbury Development Fund, director since 1 956 and vice president since 1972 of Citizens Savings Bank and Trust Co. in St. Johnsbury. He was a member and past president of St. Johnsbury Rotary, receiving the Paul Harris Fellowship in 1986. His other interests included Elks, Masons, and United Commercial Travelers. On July 18, 1936, he married Ruth Skinner, who predeceased him March 30, 1992.
Survivors include his mother, Philomene Wheelock of Whittier, Calif; a son and his wife, Stephen and Virginia Wheelock of Charlotte, N.C.; four brothers, Clarence “Pat” Wheelock of Lakeside, Calif., Almond “Pete” Wheelock of Vista, Calif., Everett Wheelock of Harlingen, Texas, and Frank Wheelock of Hampton, Va.; three sisters, Phyllis Bernier of Havre de Grace, Md., Elizabeth Davis of Farmington, N.Y., and Frances Giguere of La Mirada, Calif; two grandchildren, Daniel and Jillian Wheelock of Charlotte, N.C.; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Almond Wheelock in 1970; a sister, Harriett; and a brother, Eldon
Memorial services celebrating the lives of both Russell and Ruth Wheelock will be held in North Congregational Church, Main Street, St. Johnsbury, Friday at 1 1 a.m., with the Rev. Jay Sprout and Fr. Melvin Richardson co-officiating. Burial will be in Passumpsic Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.
