Ardath Fairn Jones, Little House co-founder
Ardath Fairn Jones, 82, a 55-year resident of Atherton, died June 21, 1995 of complications following a stroke. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, she came to California in the 1930s. As one of the founding members and president of the Peninsula Volunteers in 1947, she began a series of community-enriching efforts. She helped set up the Little House senior center on Menlo Avenue, designed by her late husband Kingsford Jones, as a meeting place for senior citizens. "She was involved in special services for senior citizens," said Arden Jones of Portola Valley, one of her four sons. "She realized older people were not necessarily near their loved ones, and she greatly understood that." The Little House senior center, which currently stands in Menlo Park, became a model for senior services nationwide. She also served for many years on the San Mateo County Commission on Aging, eventually devoting her time to the Human Investment Project in Belmont, which supports programs for the elderly through private and public funds. Another project, Neighbor on the Block, arranged to have trained volunteers visit elderly or immobile people in their homes. In recognition of her years of dedication to the community, she received the Citizen of the Year award by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in 1982. "She was a social person and she did a lot for the community," her son said. "She wanted to keep her family together. She believed the family was the center of a great society." She is survived by four sons, Kingsford Jones of Menlo Park, Arden Jones of Portola Valley, Bevan Jones of Portola Valley and Douglas Jones of Portola Valley; two sisters, Sylvia Cornish of Atherton and Shirley Aston of Wolfville, Nova Scotia; two brothers, Laird Fairn of Albany, Nova Scotia, and Hugh Fairn of Wolfville, Nova Scotia; and eight grandchildren. Services have been held. Memorial contributions may be sent to Little House Senior Center, 800 Middle Avenue, Menlo Park, CA 94025, or to the Sierra Club Foundation, 220 Sansome Street, Suite 1100, San Francisco, CA 94104.
