PHYLLIS AMANDA KNEELAND WHITTEN
SEARSPORT —
Phyllis Amanda Kneeland Whitten, 93, died May 26, 2001, in the room in which she was born on Sept. 10, 1907, in Searsport. She was the wife of the late Bertwell MacFarland Whitten and the daughter of Jane (Curtis) Kneeland and Henry Wilton Kneeland.
She was educated in the Boston public schools and Chamberlayne Preparatory School. She attended the University of Maine, Class of 1931. She received her diploma from Perry Kindergarten Normal School (Curry College), Boston, in 1933. Phyllis bverf children and they loved her. After graduation, she taught at the Morgan Memorial Day Care (Goodwill Industries) until her marriage on Sept. 14, 1 935.
Phyllis was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, West Roxbury, Mass., the West Roxbury Historical Society, the Harbinger Club, the West Roxbury Roslindale YMCA, the Parkway Seniors, and the West Roxbury Planning Board. In Searsport, she was a member of the Penobscot Marine Museum, the Carver Memorial Library Association, and the Mosman Memorial Park Association, where she was an honorary trustee. She received pastoral care from the ministry of the United Methodist Church, Searsport, and St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bangor. She was a loyal supporter of the General Alumni Association and the Senior Alumni of the University of Maine. She was also a member of the Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, the National Arbor Day Foundation, and the National Lung Association.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Jane C. Whitten and her son, Bertwell K. Whitten and his wife, Hope (Ford), all of Searsport; three grandchildren, Steven B. Whitten and his wife, Sandra (Hannon) of Scottsdale, Ariz., Ellen W. Lencioni and her husband, Patnck of Ann Arbor, Mich., Richard H. Whitten and his wife, Leah (Pulaski) of Seattle, Wash.; and .five greatgrandchildren, Kristin P. Whitten and Abigail R. Whitten of Scottsdale, Ariz , and Kevin W. Lencioni, Matthew R. Lencioni and Peter S. Lencioni of Ann Arbor, Mich.
Visiting hours will be held 7-9 p m. Tuesday, May 29, ot Young Funeral Home, Searsport. There will be a private interment at the Searsport Village Cemetery. SEARSPORT, Nov. 11 — Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Kneeland (Miss Janie Curtis) of West Roxbury Mass, and Searsport have announced the engagement of their daughter Miss Phyllis A. Kneeland to Bertwell M. Whitten of Rosllndale, Mass., son of Mrs Grace M. Whitten. Miss Kneeland is graduate of the Chamberlayne school Perry Kindergarten Normal school and attended the University of Maine for two years. She is well known in Searsport where she has spent her summers since a small child. Mr Whitten is a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, class of 1930, and is now employed In the engineering department of the Boston Consolidated Gas company. No date has been set for the wedding.
