Caroline Marchant passed away peacefully after a brief illness on December 3, 2020, in Winnipeg, at 93.
Caroline is survived by her sons, Chris (Debra) Thorkelson, Dan (Donna Wang) Thorkelson, Ben (Margaret Mills) Thorkelson, Trevor Thorkelson; grandchildren, Erika, David, Thomas; sisters, Julia, Deloise; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
On September 29, 1927, Caroline was born to Barzillia Joseph and Florence Belle Marchant in North Kildonan. She grew up with eight siblings during the great depression and inherited her father’s work ethic and green thumb. She loved gardens and worked hard to improve everywhere she lived. Whether she did a full renovation or created a window box geranium jungle, she made each place into her home. Home and family meant the world to Caroline.
Caroline’s working career began in her late teens at Eaton’s. She continued to work there while raising four sons. Later she was proud of working for Sperry Univac until her retirement. She was also very proud of her private pilot’s license and membership in The 99s: International Organization of Women Pilots. Caroline’s long life included adversity. At times she needed help to carry on. In gratitude, she volunteered on the Winnipeg Crisis Line.
We are genuinely grateful to the Lion’s Manor staff in Winnipeg for their dedication and the level of care they provided to Caroline. Thank you for giving her a safe place to drift in for a soft final landing. In accordance with Caroline’s wishes, there will be a cremation and no service. Instead of flowers or cards, please donate to your local crisis line or SPCA - Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
