DURHAM — Wendy L. Chipman, age 70, of Durham, North Carolina, died May 14, 2016, at Hillcrest Convalescent Center. Wendy lived her life with extraordinary courage and grace through decades of health challenges. Wendy was born in New York, the adored daughter of the late Sidney Shaw Chipman and Christine Fatherley Chipman. She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and, after pursuing a degree and career in merchandising, obtained her B.A. from NC State University in Raleigh. She subsequently worked for many years in the office of the North Carolina Attorney General. Wendy was cherished by her friends and family for her wit, generous spirit and intellectual curiosity. Always a force of positive energy, and unwilling to accept the limitations that her declining health imposed, Wendy purchased and learned to pilot her wheel chair accessible van. This enabled her to continue her dedication to various volunteer organizations including Meals on Wheels and Dress for Success. Despite it posing a significant challenge, Wendy continued to pursue her passion for gardening and enjoyed sharing her gardening stories with her sister-in-law, Paula Chipman, with whom she shared a special bond. Always seeking ways to keep her mind active, Wendy regularly participated in two bridge clubs, two book clubs and successfully tackled the daily crossword. She enjoyed the Continuing Ed courses at Duke University, including those on the architecture of Durham, art history, and the writings of Shakespeare. Wendy also enjoyed the courses offered at Duke Gardens and helped to develop one of their recent plant courses. She recently attended a Bob Dylan concert, determined to see him perform one last time. Wendy is survived by, and will greatly be missed by her brothers, Robert K. Chipman (Edith Leckey) of Bradford, Vermont and David R. Chipman (Rosemary Chipman) of Shelburne, Vermont; her sister-in-law, Paula B. Chipman of Bloomfield, Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a loyal and affectionate group of friends whose love and unending support was essential to her quality of life and for which her family is very grateful. Contributions in Wendy’s memory may be made to Meals on Wheels of Durham, 2522 Ross Road, Durham, NC 27703 (mowdurham.org), Dress for Success Triangle NC (trianglenc.dressforsuccess.org), or another charity of one’s choice.
