Joan (“Joanie”) Chace Hallberg, a long time Burlington resident passed away after an extended illness with her family at her bedside on Sunday morning, January 4, 2015. She was 80 years old. Joan was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Myron and Ruth Chace. She grew up in Arlington Heights and was a graduate of Arlington High School and Colby Sawyer College. She began her career at American Mutual Insurance Company where she met her husband of 55 years, Frank Hallberg. They married in 1959, and in 1962 moved into their Burlington home, where they raised son Mark and daughter Susan. Joan was a 35-year employee of Friendly Ice Cream in Burlington and later Bedford Joanie loved her work, community, family, and friends. She was an avid Bridge player, faithful town poll worker, and active member of the Republican Town Committee. She delighted in annual summer visits to Cape Cod, first Chatham with her parents, and later to West Dennis with her own family. Joanie cherished her travels around the U.S. and to Asia and Europe with her family. Joanie genuinely cared about the wellbeing and happiness of her family and friends. She always stopped to share a laugh and make a new friend. Surely, Joanie will be missed by many. Joan is survived by her husband, Frank Dewey Hallberg, son Mark Dewey Hallberg and his wife Ayako of Hingham, and daughter Susan Hallberg Connolly and her husband Neil of Hingham. She was predeceased by her siblings Richard Chace, Barbara Parkins, and James Chace. Joan was the proud grandmother of Evan Kai Hallberg, Ethan Sage Hallberg, Christine Connolly & Katy Connolly. A Memorial visitation will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Friday, Jan. 9 from 4-8 p.m. Memorial Services will be held at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 6 Lexington St., Burlington on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. All friends and relatives are invited to attend. .
