LEOMINSTER –
Gertrude “Trudy” Marie (Kellett) May, a long-time resident of Leominster, passed away on June 3, 2007, due to complications relating to lung disease.
She was raised in Goffstown, N.H. and graduated from Goffstown High School in 1953. She graduated from Springfield College in 1957 and later earned a Masters Degree in Education from Fitchburg State College.
Trudy May worked for the Fitchburg Public School system for 35 years as a Physical Education and Health teacher. Her first position was at B.F. Brown Junior High School. She transferred to Reingold Elementary School when it opened. While there, she created and ran the annual Field Days and with two colleagues was a co-creator of the Integrated Arts Program. At the end of her career she worked at Memorial Junior High School as the Health Coordinator for the entire system where she implemented various city-wide health programs.
She was the first female member of the Leominster Athletic Council. She was a founding member of the Montachusett Race League, an association created to offer alpine racing throughout Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. She was an avid skier and swimmer. Trudy was an active member of the Springfield College Alumni Association, Class of ’57.
Trudy is survived by her husband of 48 years, Walter F. May and her children Michael May of Columbia, Md. and Brenda-Lee May Prescott of Stavanger, Norway, their spouses Mary and Jody respectively, and her grandchildren, Eliza and Hannah Prescott and Jack May.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 6, at 7 p.m. in the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., Leominster. Calling hours are Wednesday, June 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. There will be a memorial service in Hebron, N.H. at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Diversified Visiting Nurse Association (DVNA) Hospice Program, 25 Tucker Drive, Leominster, MA 01453 or The Trudy May Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is being created in her honor.
