Marilyn Shaw Amato Gerling died in Simsbury, CT on October 19, 2018 surrounded by her loving daughters. Marilyn was born on April 4, 1933 in Springfield, MA. A graduate of Classical High School in Springfield, MA, she received her associates degree from Bay Path Junior College in 1952. After raising her family she received her B.S. from American International College in 1985, and her Masters in Social Work from University of Connecticut in 1987. She was most recently employed as the Director of the Mansfield Senior Center from 1988-2003. Following her retirement, in addition to spending time traveling nationally and internationally with her husband and enjoying time with her grandchildren around the country, Marilyn continued to follow her passion of service to others. She was active in her community at Glen Ridge Association, the Mansfield Senior Center, and in her church, the First United Methodist Church in Mansfield, CT, and was trained in Stephen Ministry. More recently she was an active member of the First Church of Christ Congregational, in Glastonbury. She was also a member of PEO International, a philanthropic organization of women celebrating the education and advancement of women.
Marilyn is survived by her daughters Gayle, Susan, and Sara Amato and Kimberly Liu and spouses; her stepson Stephen Gerling and wife Martha; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Bernard Gerling.
A memorial service will be held at First Church of Christ Congregational, 2183 Main Street, Glastonbury, CT, at 1 p.m. on December 1 with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Marilyn’s life. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks to be joined in supporting McLean’s Memory Care.
