ALFRED ALKSNIS — Peacefully, on November 6, 2007 at the age of 82, Alfred Voldemar Alksnis passed away at the Winnipegosis General Hospital. His wife Velta, predeceased Alfred in April 1999.
He is survived by his children, Fred, Norman (Theresa), John (Kim), Andy (Colleen), and Gaida, as well as his grandchildren, Dillon, Kyle, Landon, Rylan, and Robyn. His sister Gaida and her husband Janis, as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive Alfred.
Alfred was born on December 5, 1924 in Latvia. He served in the Second World War and also worked in the coal mines in Belgium for four years. He then immigrated to Canada, where he met Velta Yeager and they married in 1959. Alfred worked for Bart Construction in Winnipeg until he moved, with his family, to the Yeager farm in the Oak Brae district. He was a jack-of-all-trades and over the years he worked at a number of carpentry, cement work and other jobs in the surrounding communities. Alfred was known for his storytelling, accordion playing, his love of animals, and the pancake breakfasts he cooked for his family.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Winnipegosis General Hospital, as well as the neighbours and friends who have always been so good to Dad. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipegosis General Hospital. A celebration of Alfred’s life will occur at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17 at the Rorketon Drop in Centre.
