Dr. James C. Lyons Dies: Well-Known Linwood Doctor
Dr. James C. Lyons, one of the Chester area’s most widely-known and well-liked physicians, died this morning at his home, 156 Ridge road, Linwood.
Dr. Lyons, who was 68, had been ill about a year and had not practiced during that time. But for nearly 40 years prior to that, he had been a general practitioner in the lower county area in addition to being an industrial physician.
From his start in the horse and buggy days through the machine age, Dr. Lyons had built up an intensive practice. A friendly person, he was never too busy to help others.
Dr. Lyons was born in Nova Scotia and was graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1909. He opened his first office in Rockdale, later moved to Marcus Hook, and then to Linwood where he practiced until about a year ago.
He served as industrial physician for Sinclair Refining Company, Sun Oil Company, Worth Steel in Claymont, and years ago for the American Viscose Corporation.
In the days when Dr. Lyons began his medical work here, horse and buggy was the mode of transportation for physicians. Bur Dr. Lyons kept abreast of the time and owned one of the first Fords in the area. Dr. Lyons was a Baptist. He was a member of the American Medical Association and of the Delaware County Medical Society, and an honorary member of a medical society at Jefferson Medical College. He also was a Mason.
A very popular person, Dr. Lyons had a wide circle of friends in Chester and throughout the county. He always found time to help others and gave many young doctors a push up the ladder in their careers.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Theresa C. Lyons, and seven children, Mrs. Vera Phillippe, Morton; Mrs. William E. Lyons (sic), Claymont, Del.; Mrs. Louise C. Hodgkins, Lee, Mass.; Edward T. Lyons, Springfield; Dr. James C. Lyons, Jr., Holly Oak, Del.; Theresa I. Lyons, R.N., Linwood, and Dr. Howard H. Lyons, U. S. Navy, Washington, D. C. Nine grandchildren also survive.
Friends may call Thursday evening at his late residence, 156 Ridge road, Linwood. The funeral will be held from the home, Friday, for the family and a few personal friends. Burial will be in Chester Rural Cemetery.
