It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of David Appleby of Gagetown, NB on Sunday, August 11th, 2013 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. He was born in Woodstock, NB (Suckers Flat) on April 11th, 1930 to the late Albert and Erma (Thorton) Appleby. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Eunice (Glenn). David was a retired member of the Canadian Armed Forces, serving with the 23rd Independent Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers. A veteran of the Korean War, David also instructed at the Military Engineering School in Chilliwack, BC. He retired as a Sgt. Major. Following his military service, he became a businessman; he and Eunice owning and operating Appleby’s Bindery Ltd. in Upper Gagetown for over 30 years, employing several local people. David was very proud of his military service, and continued to be involved: volunteer/organizer at the Military Engineering Museum at CFB Gagetown; Past President of the Atlantic Retired Sappers; Past President of the Korean Veterans Association; and was involved heavily with getting the Hands Across the Border Memorial Monument created in Madison, Maine. In September 2013 David will be awarded the Korean Ambassador’s Medal posthumously. He will be sadly missed by his children, Edward Appleby (Carolyn) of Appleby’s Point, NB, Eva Douthwright (Rod) of Cambridge Narrows, NB, Shirley MacAlpine (Brian) of Salisbury, NB, Erma Appleby (Dwight) of Gagetown, NB and John Appleby (Heidi) of Cape Breton, NS; loving partner, Gladys Gertridge of Gaspereau, NS; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Rita Hart as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Eunice he was predeceased by his brother, Perley; sisters, Marina, Mary Ann and Starlene; and granddaughter, Erin Appleby. Visitation will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago Street on Monday, August 12th from 7-9 pm and on Tuesday, August 13th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held in the Oromocto Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, August 14th, 2013 at 11:00 am with Rev. Dr. Perry Hanley officiating. Interment will take place in the Jacksonville Cemetery. Memorial tributes in David’s memory may be made to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Erin Appleby Breast Health Fund.
