Lloyd Charles King Jr., 89, passed away March 1, 2017, in Atlanta at the home of his son, Dan King.
Charles was born March 22, 1927 in Chicago. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary; his son, Paul King; his son-in-law, John Relyea; his parents, Dorothea and Lloyd King of El Dorado, Kan.; and his brother, Kenneth King of Leon, Kan.
Charles and Mary were parents to seven children. The surviving children and their spouses are: Marsha and Nathan Miles of Dallas; Kendra King of Atlanta; Margaret and Paul Pennington of Cincinnati; David and Beki King of Houston; Dan and Debra King of Atlanta; Sarah and David Bowen of Gainesville, Ga.; and Rebecca and John Kiest of Houston. He is also survived by his caretaker and beloved family friend, Elvia Murillo.
Charles was a treasured grandfather of 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and he had many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three brothers, five sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law: Edward and Corky King of Huntsville, Ala.; Keith and Joan King of Carson City, Nev.: Ruth King of Leon, Kan.; Don and Joanne King of Richardson, Texas; Sherry Stuart of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Walter Blanchard of Mountainburg.
Born near the start of the Great Depression, Charles grew up on his family farm in Leon, the second of five brothers. He served two years in the U.S. Navy, then attended and graduated from Wichita State University. He married the love of his life, Mary Rosson, in 1952, then worked as a scout executive for the Boy Scouts of America. Feeling called to serve in the ministry, he went on to attend Nebraska Christian College and became a minister of the gospel, serving in churches in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas.
Charles and Mary raised their family in Fort Smith and were active members of Central Christian Church there for many years. Charles was a godly man and a devout Christian, a “good and faithful servant” to the end. He dedicated his life to spreading the Good News of the gospel, and frequently turned to the scriptures to guide him through life’s ups and downs. He was a man of the highest integrity, who instilled his strong faith and Christian values in his children, and he leaves with them that enduring legacy.
Charles and Mary moved to Atlanta in December 2006 to be closer to family and medical facilities. They were members of Christian Church Buckhead. After Mary passed away in 2008, Charles spent his remaining years grieving the loss of his loving wife and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His children now take comfort in knowing that their mom and dad are united once again in the presence of the Lord, and that Charles no longer must struggle to breathe.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at H.M. Patterson Funeral Home-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta. Funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Patterson’s Oglethorpe Hill Chapel. Interment will follow the service at 1:30 p.m. at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Ga.
