CORNISH, H. James III — Died peacefully at his home in Woodside on June 5. He was seventy years old.
Jim was born in Palo Alto and graduated from Palo Alto High School and Stanford University. At Stanford, Jim was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity and the ROTC, played freshman basketball and four years of varsity tennis. He also competed at Wimbledon. After graduating from Stanford, Jim joined the Army as a lieutenant and was stationed at Ford Ord in Monterey. Following two years of military service, Jim joined Cornish and Carey Realtors in Palo Alto. Jim’s father, H.J. Cornish, who died unexpectedly at the age of 52 when Jim was a freshman at Stanford, founded Cornish and Carey in 1935. At Cornish & Carey, Jim worked his way up to partner in four years, buying his way into the business after his father’s share of the company dissolved upon his death. Jim eventually became President and Chairman of the Board. Cornish and Carey was the largest residential real estate company in Northern California when it was purchased by Coldwell Banker five years ago. Jim was passionate about the real estate business, and even after his retirement made frequent visits to his old office. In retirement, Jim was an avid golfer and bridge player, and was profoundly dedicated to his family. Throughout his successful business life, Jim was also a dedicated community leader. He was past president of the Rotary Club and the Board of Realtors. Jim was also a long-time member of the Palo Alto Club, Menlo Circus Club in Atherton, Vintage Club in Indian Wells, and past president of the Menlo Country Club in Woodside. His family wrote: "Jim’s wise council, integrity, and passion for life were an inspiration to his family and friends. He will be dearly missed."
His wife Lynn Cornish, his sons Jay Cornish of Philadelphia and Hugh Cornish of Portola Valley, daughter Cassandra Cornish of Menlo Park, sister Cynthia Nowlan of Carmel Valley, five grandchildren, and beloved dog Bogey survive Jim.
