Williamsport - SARAH ELIZABETH CARPENTER ROW, 86, of 16505 Virginia Ave., Cottage 83, in Williamsport, Md., passed away Thursday, June 21, 2007, at her home. Born Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1920, in Hattiesburg, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Melvin Randolph Carpenter and Ruth Neel Carpenter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Linwood Parker Row Sr., in 1982.
She was a 1939 graduate of Hancock High School, and later graduated in 1943 from Western Kentucky University with a degree in home economics, and later received her master’s equivalency. She was employed by the Washington County Board of Education for 25 years, teaching at both Boonsboro and South Hagerstown high schools. Her master’s program was in child development and family living, and centered on the establishment of a child development program initiated at South Hagerstown High School. She was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Williamsport. She belonged to the Women’s Club, where she previously served on the Board of Directors, and also the Crossroads Garden Club, where she previously served as president.
She is survived by two sons, Linwood Parker Row Jr. of Sykesville, Md., and Neel Carpenter Row of Morrisdale, Pa.; one sister, Catherine Thiele of Franklin, Tenn.; two grandsons, Christian Matthew Row of Frederick, Md., and Michael Allen Row of Sykesville; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Frances Gandy; and two brothers, Melvin Randolph Carpenter Jr. and Dr. William Neel Carpenter.
Services were held at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown; interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
