Berwick, Maine born Phineas Butler Hanson was a merchant in Edgefield, South Carolina in the 1860 census, his residence was listed as Cold Springs, SC when he married Sarah J Hobbs of North Berwick on 13 Aug 1857. He was a member of the “Edgefield Hussars”, a company of state militia, who enlisted into the Confederate service as Company I, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry (note the stone says “7th”). Phineas died from typhoid fever on 17 Nov 1863 and was buried two days later at Augusta, Georgia in Magnolia Cemetery. The stone in North Berwick is a cenotaph.
