      Merle D. Mitchell, 78, of Mesa, Ariz., died of heart ailment Dec. 24 at home.
       Mr. Mitchell was born in Dallas County and had lived in Minburn for 61 years before moving to Arizona 17 years ago. He was retired trucking firm owner and operator, and a Navy veteran of World War II. He had received a Purple Heart and was a member of Elks Lodge. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing and traveling.
       He is survived by his wife, Isabelle; two daughters, Diana Harper of Pinehurst, N.C., and Carol Bose of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a wife, Fae.
