    • Source: The Bridgeport Telegram, 24 Jun 1927 — Joseph Hancort, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hancort, of Main street, Stratford, has come home from Dartmouth college where he is a sophomore for the summer vacation and had as his weekend guest John Herrick, of Pelham Manor, a grandnephew of Ambassador Herrick. Mr. Hancort motored to Pelham Manor with his guest and was entertained at the Orienta club.

    5. [S4] Obituary.
      Joseph S. Hancort of Wellesley died May 13 at the Winchester Nursing Home after a brief illness. He was 78.
       Mr. Hancort was born in Bridgeport, Conn. on Dec. 1, 1907. He graduated from the Bridgeport Public Schools and from Dartmouth College where he earned a master’s degree. He became for a time and economics lecturer at the college.
       He worked his way through college by playing the banjo with the Barbary Coast Orchestra. He taught banjo playing in Wellesley until his death. In the mid-1930s, he joined the investment firm of Brown Brothers Harriman of Boston and became head of investments. He retired in 1973.
       He was a World War II veteran of the Air Force, attaining the rank of major. He served in the Air Material Command in Arizona, Washington, D.C. and Paris, France. He also re-enlisted for the Korean War. He moved to Wellesley in 1953.
       Mr. Hancort enjoyed painting and he exhibited his watercolors and seascapes in local and New England art shows.
       He also acted with amateur and semi-professional theatrical groups including the Arlington Friends fo the Drama. He was an expert in Gilbert and Sullivan and performed many roles with the Neponset Choral Society and the Winchester Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He was a member of the Security Analysts Association and belonged to St. Andrew’s Church.
       He was a widower of Margaret Van Leer (Skinner) Hancort. He leaves his daughter, Mary Hancort Behnke and two grandchildren, Matthew and Margaret Behnke, all of Winchester.
       A funeral service is scheduled for tomorrow (May 16) in St. Andrew’s Church with the Rev. Martha Hedgpeth ant the Rev. William Heuss officiating. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery will be private. Arrangement are by the J.S. Waterman & Sons Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Music Program, c/o St. Andrew’s Church, 79 Denton Road.
