FORT FAIRFIELD –
Gary W. Doughty, 76, husband of Signa (DeWitt) Doughty, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday afternoon, May 30, 2011, at a Presque Isle health care facility, after a brief period of declining health. He was born Sept. 17, 1934, in Fort Fairfield, son of Benjamin Franklin and Doris (Hansen) Doughty.
He graduated as valedictorian of Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1952, and was married to Signa A. DeWitt, Nov. 25, 1953. He served in the Maine Army National Guard from the early to mid 1950s and started working in 1951 at the Fort Fairfield Woolworth. After relocating to Saugus, Mass., Gary had been employed by Sears and Roebuck Co. for 25 years until moving back to Fort Fairfield, and became employed by S.W. Collins, Caribou and Presque Isle, where he worked for 22 years until his retirement in 2008. Gary had also been self-employed as owner-operator of Achorn’s Shoe Store, Fort Fairfield, for several years. Mr. Doughty was a member of Fairfield Bethel Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Fort Fairfield Rotary Club, and served on Fort Fairfield Planning Board. Gary enjoyed fishing, reading Western novels, woodworking and held the distinction of being a certified locksmith. Gary was also an avid Red Sox fan for many years.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Doughty was predeceased by one brother, Linwood Doughty. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Signa Doughty of Fort Fairfield; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Donna Doughty of Winslow, Alan and Sharon Doughty of Bedford, N.H., and Matthew and Roberta Doughty of Fort Fairfield; four daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and David Dix of Wakefield, Mass., Karyn and Ryan Pinette of Caribou, Carla and Stephen St. Germain of Woburn, Mass., and Christina Doughty of Fort Fairfield; one brother and sister-in-law, Darryl E. “Butch” Sr. and Edith Doughty of Fort Fairfield; four sisters, Janet Owens of Fort Fairfield, Patricia Mahn of Onalaska, Wis., Virginia Cote and Joanne Wilcox, both of Fort Fairfield; 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield. The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, June 2, at Bethel Baptist Church, corner of Main and Presque Isle streets, Fort Fairfield, with Asa Cook officiating. Interment will be held after the service at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held immediately after the interment service at the church reception hall. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Doughty to Bethel Baptist Church, care of Diana Cook, 839 Limestone Road, Fort Fairfield, ME 04742. Envelopes will be available at both the funeral home and the church.
