    3. [S4] Obituary.
George David Palmer, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011
PORTLAND — A good man has died. A kind man who lived the Golden Rule. A military veteran who served each of you reading this by answering his Country’s call in its time of need.
George was a local boy, born in Portland, in 1923, as the son of Walter and Mabel Wilkinson Palmer. He was educated in Portland’s public schools. After his military service, George was a watchmaker, and a manager for the Day’s Jewelry Stores. He ran the Gardiner and later the Lewiston stores, and worked at the Congress Street Day’s store. He traveled the world, visiting his son and the son’s family, while the son was on active military duty.He was a charmer, and was generous to a fault. He was a terrible golfer, but an excellent drinking buddy.
He will be sorely missed by his son, Dr. David Palmer, and David’s wife Linda; by his grandson, Christian and his wife Kristin, by his granddaughter, Whitney Palmer Bressler and her husband Patrick; and by the young great-grandchildren, Zachary Scott Palmer, Aiden Thomas Palmer and Quinn Olivia Bressler.
George was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner, a Life Member of the National Rifle Association, and an amateur radio operator, with Life Membership in the Amateur Radio Relay League. His amateur radio skills he used to relay messages for U.S. service members, back to their families in the Portland area, before the era of electronic mail.
The family is so exceedingly grateful to Dr. James Zeitlin who cared for George for 20 years, and to each member of the Togus and Saco V.A. staff, the staff at the South Portland Nursing Home, and most recently, to the amazingly caring and sensitive staff members of Maine Medical Center for the concern and technical excellence they have shown in helping George is so many ways, over the years and these last few days. You people are the best! Good bye, Dad, goodbye Papa, goodbye, George. You will be missed, my friend, my teacher. In lieu of gifts for any charity, please toast to your memories of George.
