FORT FAIRFIELD –
Herman L. Cote, 68, husband of Virginia D. Cote, passed away Wednesday evening, March 10, 2010, at a Caribou health care facility, after an extended illness. He was born June 2, 1941, in Fort Fairfield, the son of Joseph Edward and LeAnne “Lillian” (Girard) Cote. He attended Fort Fairfield schools and married Virginia D. Doughty, Oct. 28, 1967. He was a communicant of Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield; and had been employed by several area farmers, as well as being self-employed as an autobody technician. Herman had been a member of Fort Fairfield Fish and Game Club, a volunteer member of Fort Fairfield Fire Department and was a master Maine guide. Herman also held the distinct honor of being mentioned in National Geographic magazine, in an article dedicated to Allagash Wilderness Waterway, while he was a Allagash Wilderness Waterway park ranger, stationed at Churchill Dam in the early 1970s. Herman greatly enjoyed the outdoors and was a talented woodworker.
In addition to his parents, Herman was predeceased by three brothers, Girard J., Norman E. and Robert L. Cote; and one sister, Mary Burns. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Virginia D. Cote; one son and daughter-in-law, Shawn E. and Kimberly Cote; one daughter, Janelle L. Cote; one grandson, Seth I. Cote, all of Fort Fairfield; one brother, Donald Cote of New Sweden; four sisters, Raymonde Chambers, Lorraine Flannery, both of Fort Fairfield, Verla Brooks of Lisbon Falls and Gloria Johnson of Fort Kent; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where a vigil service will be conducted 8 p.m. by the Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie. A private graveside service will be conducted later in the spring at St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Herman to establish a college fund for his grandson, Seth, care of Janelle Cote, P.O. Box 81, Fort Fairfield, ME 04742. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
