    • Walter served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II in Company C 103 Infantry from March of 1941 to May of 1945. Mr. Doughty earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with four Service Stars, a Purple Heart for wounds received in action in the Philippine Islands, and two Bronze Stars, one of which was presented on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004.

      FORT FAIRFIELD – Walter T. Doughty, 91, husband of Verna H. Doughty, died Feb. 26, 2004, at a Mars Hill healthcare facility following a brief illness.
       He was born Nov. 26, 1912, in Fort Fairfield, the son of William H. and Janet (Coes) Doughty. He attended local schools and was married to Verna Hansen on June 11, 1947. Walter served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II in Company C 103 Infantry from March of 1941 to May of 1945. Mr. Doughty earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with four Service Stars, a Purple Heart for wounds received in action in the Philippine Islands, and two Bronze Stars, one of which was presented on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004. Mr. Doughty was a member of the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Fort Fairfield, the Disabled American Veterans, the Fort Fairfield Fish and Game Club, the Masonic Lodge, Trinity Chapter of Presque Isle, and the National Rifle Association. He had been employed for many years as a bricklayer at the former Loring Air Force Base. Walter was known as an honest, hardworking man. He loved children, fishing and hunting, and attended the Bethel Baptist Church, Fort Fairfield.
       In addition to his parents, Mr. Doughty was predeceased by 11 brothers, Franklin, Rudolph, Clarence, Luther, Frankie, Arthur, Robert, Philip, Harry, Ralph and Charles; four sisters, Madeline Hansen, Mildred Estey, Kathleen Fields and Glenda Hillyard. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mrs. Verna Doughty of Fort Fairfield; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Wendell Doughty of Fort Fairfield, Bruce and Phyllis Doughty of Manchester, Conn.; two sisters, Helen Clark of Perth Andover, New Brunswick, Gertrude Smith of Bowdoin; several nieces and nephews.
       Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2004, at the Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield. Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at the funeral home, with Asa Cook officiating. Interment will take place at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield, later in the spring. A time of fellowship with refreshments will be held at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield, immediately following the funeral service. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Doughty to the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, P.O. Box 919, Fort Fairfield, ME 04742. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
