      BRUNSWICKGertrude Maude (Doughty) Smith, 90, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine due to a severe fall and dementia. She was a long time resident of Dionne Commons Assisted Living facility in Brunswick.
       She was born in Fort Fairfield, Maine on Feb. 3, 1924, the daughter of Janet (Coes) and William Doughty. Gertrude was the 16th child of 20 children and the last remaining sibling. She was educated in the Fort Fairfield schools. She married Bernard Smith on October 18, 1941. They were married for 61 years and had two children, Theodore Smith and Mary Smith.
       Gertrude worked as a cook in the Richmond School cafeteria for 33 years before retiring. She was a member of the Richmond First Baptist Church and played piano for several occasions until the church burned down. She then became a member of the Richmond Nazarene Church and worshipped there for several years.
       Gertrude loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved walking, working in the garden, her flowers and just being outdoors, and visiting with her brothers and sisters.
       She is survived by her son Theodore Smith and his wife Muriel of Litchfield, Maine, and her daughter Mary (Smith) Sturtevant and her husband Paul of Whitwell, Tenn; four grandchildren, Shawn Smith and his wife Kim of Manchester, Maine, Tammy (Smith) Scott and her husband Michael of Auburn, Maine, Julie Swafford and her husband Gary of Whitwell, Tenn., and Rebecca Sitz of Whitwell, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren, Meghan and Shelby Smith of Manchester, Maine, Mikaela and Madisyn Scott of Auburn, Maine, Peige and her husband Doug Vaughan of Midway, Tenn., Gabrielle and Daytona Swafford of Whitwell, Tenn. and Jenna Sitz of Whitwell, Tenn.; and two great-great-grandchildren, Payton and Devyn Vaughan of Midway, Tenn.
       Gertrude is predeceased by her parents William and Janet Doughty; her husband Bernard, all of her 19 brothers and sisters.
       There will be no funeral services at this time and a spring interment service will be held at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery chapel on the Mount Vernon Road in Augusta. Gertrude’s family would like to thank the staff of Dionne Commons Assisted Living Home in Brunswick, ME, as well as the doctors and nursing staff on the second floor, room 218, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, ME, for their loving and tender care while she was there.
