James W. Beach, 94, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Friday, June 25, 2004, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center in DeKalb. Born Jan. 29, 1910, in Dubuque, Iowa, James attended the Dubuque public schools and then Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. While there, he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering and met Helen McGinnis of Norfolk, Neb., whom he married in 1935. In the early 1930s, he worked in a sash, door and blind factory until a teaching job became available at the University of Dubuque. He left there to return to Iowa State University, where he taught and earned his doctorate in mathematics. He also taught at the New Mexico School of Mines, the University of New Mexico and Northern Illinois University. James lived in the DeKalb community since 1953. After retiring in 1975, he spent summers in DeKalb, and winters in Tucson, Ariz., until the last three years, when he remained in DeKalb. He lived at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center for the past eight years. He was a member of DeKalb First Congregational United Church of Christ, the Mathematics Association, Sigma Xi, the Lincolnites of Tucson and Tucson Stamp Club.
He is survived by two sons, Allen of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Edward (Lynne) Beach of Freehold, N.J.; and two grandsons, David and Kevin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; a brother, Edward; a sister, Ruth; and his parents.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in DeKalb, with Pastor Joseph Gastiger officiating. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials can be made to the family for a fund to be established at a later date.
